Continuing in this sermon series from the book of Malachi, a fourth oracle charges God’s people with idolatry. On the surface of it, the people of Malachi’s time do not appear to be engaged in the gross immorality common to other times, but the answer to Westminster Larger Catechism question 105 provides a biblical perspective: “The sins forbidden in the first commandment [i.e., Thou shalt have no other gods before me.] are atheism, in denying, or not having a God; idolatry, in having or worshiping more gods than one, or any with, or instead of the true God; the not having and avouching him for God, and our God; the omission or neglect of any thing due to him, required in this commandment…” Idolatry worships more gods than the one true God, or worships any other god with or instead of the One. And this God is jealous for His glory.
