Children's Ministry at New Life in Christ Church

Published August 13, 2025

Dear New Life in Christ Church Family,

One of the things I love most about New Life in Christ Church is seeing all ages gathered together each Lord’s Day to worship our promise-keeping God. People mention it to me all the time. The voices of young and old lifting praise side-by-side are a living testimony to Psalm 145:4: “One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.”

Children are not “future members” of the church—they are members now. They are deeply loved by their Creator and Redeemer, included in His covenant promises, and called to worship Him as members of His body. When we gather for corporate worship, we come as one body—adults, youth, and children—united in Christ. The presence of children reminds us that God’s faithfulness stretches from generation to generation.

The Value of Children in Worship
Our philosophy of children in worship comes from the conviction that worship is for the whole covenant family. God calls His people—of every age and ability—to hear His Word, receive His grace, and give Him glory.

Children benefit in ways that will mark them for life:

  • Identity and Purpose – Worship with the whole body helps them know who they are and why they exist: to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
  • Habits of the Heart – Even before they understand everything, they are learning reverence, obedience, and joy in God’s presence. They learn from example. Just seeing a commitment to God’s Word is instructive, even if they don’t grasp every part of the message.
  • Covenant Belonging – They see that they belong to a people, not just as isolated individuals. They are blessed in community and learn they have a responsibility to the community.

And the rest of us benefit, too:
  • They remind us to approach God with childlike faith.
  • They bear witness that God’s promises are for every generation.
  • They show us the beauty of the body of Christ in all its variety.

As Psalm 8:2 says, “Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.” The presence and praise of children are part of God’s plan to display His glory.

To the watching world, the inclusion of children in worship is a living parable. It proclaims that the gospel is for all people—not just the strong, articulate, or influential—and that every believer is dependent on Christ.

Our Commitment as a Church
We want to be intentional about drawing children into the full life of worship. That means encouraging all ages to be present, training leaders to communicate in ways that reach both children and adults, including children actively in the service, and equipping parents to disciple their children in the rhythms of worship and daily life with God.
This is not just about Sunday mornings—it’s about shaping disciples who will serve Christ their whole lives. And that is a calling we all share.

Our Denomination’s Philosophy of Children in Worship
Did you know that the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) has a thoughtful, Scripture-saturated philosophy of children in worship that helps shape a Christ-centered children’s ministry? It reflects the very convictions we seek to live out here at New Life in Christ Church. I encourage you to take a few minutes to read it:

If you have questions about how this vision works itself out in our children’s ministry, please reach out to Hannah Reed, our Children’s Ministry Director. She would love to talk with you and help you get connected.

An Invitation to Serve
With this in mind, would you take part in two important upcoming opportunities?
  • Ministry Fair – August 17 & 24

These Sundays will give you the chance to see the variety of ministries at New Life in Christ Church—children’s ministry, music, missions, care groups, and more. You can meet leaders, ask questions, and consider how God might be calling you to serve.

  • Discipleship Sunday – August 24

This will be a focused time to celebrate how discipleship is happening across our church and to help you take a next step—whether that’s joining a small group, mentoring someone, or serving on a ministry team.

Serving in children’s ministry is one of the most direct ways to live out our philosophy of children in worship. You could be the person who helps a child learn the songs of the faith, understand a Bible story, or see the joy of knowing Jesus in the life of an adult who loves them well. Those moments matter for eternity.

Why This Matters
We live in a world where many voices compete for the hearts of the next generation. God has entrusted us with the privilege of speaking the truth in love, embodying His grace, and showing a better way—the way that leads to life. Every handshake, every encouraging word, every act of service is part of that work.

When we affirm and include children in our worship, we are not just filling time until they grow up—we are shaping disciples now. As Psalm 78:4 says, we are telling “the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and His might, and the wonders that He has done.”

A Call to Action
Would you take time this week to pray about where God might have you serve? Maybe He’s calling you to step into children’s ministry, join a care group, mentor a younger believer, or try something new altogether. Whatever it is, let’s come together on August 17 and 24 to find our place in His work and commit ourselves again to making disciples—young and old—for the glory of Christ.

Faithfully yours,
Pastor Sean
